Tonight, under the half moon, we are watching some interesting things happen in this town.
The moon, half illuminated, half in shadow is a great metaphor for the precipice we find ourselves upon. The moon cycles from fully enlightened to full darkness and everything in between. It is a life cycle that has held deep meaning since time immemorial. On November 4, we will again be in the light of the full moon. November’s full moon is known as the Beaver Moon. According to the Farmers Almanac, this moon is named such because this is when Native peoples set their beaver traps before the freeze sets in. This helped to assure a supply of furs to get them through the winter.
The changing leaves tell us that we are coming to the end of a season. The moon tells us to get prepared for the winter. Breathe. The darkness will be behind us shortly and we will find ourselves in full light for another cycle. Breathe.
I’ve written before about how some people would have us reconsider what we call a lie or an untruth. I’m trying to wrap my mind around exactly what happened today. We’ve moved into a new space in this town, and how we come out on the other side is yet to be determined. Breathe.
Someone thought it was a good idea to compare local mayoral candidate Jim Merritt to Donald Trump. Given everything that Donald Trump has been accused of, this is beyond the pale of dirty politics. The implications of this accusation are multi-faceted. The time for silence has passed. The time to speak the truth is now. I am reminded of one of my favorite poems. “If” by Rudyard Kipling
“If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:”
Who would believe something so outrageous? It’s quite a gamble, calculated I’m sure, indicating a dark and cynical view of who inhabits our community. It takes …. sorry to be crass …. a lot of balls to believe that people are really so ignorant and shallow as to believe such a baseless accusation. Not only to believe that, but TO BANK ON IT.
Is it possible that there is a certain segment of society that wants to believe that? Perhaps – but I choose to believe that the majority of our neighbors and colleagues are decent people, who know just how dark and cynical a move that is. I hope that we have people in this community who, based on their own integrity and honesty, won’t abide such an outrageous accusation. I know they are out there. I’ve met some of them.
I’m not in the business of getting into the “tit for tat” games of politics. My mission is to inspire people to question deeply and critically, and to be seekers of truth. I want to encourage people to stand up for the protection of the Salish Sea and all that is sacred but under assault. Our systems are broken beyond the impact one or two personalities may or may not have on our community. My wish is that people are encouraged to ask their own questions and contribute in their own unique ways to the betterment of our community. My most sincerest wish is that we listen to understand.
I don’t know Jim Merritt. I have never met him in person. I haven’t even donated to his campaign. I have stated, on several occasions that, though I will cast my vote for him, he will not get a free pass once he takes the oath of mayor of Tacoma.
But I will be damned if I will sit idly by and abide this level of attack. Politics be damned – this is immoral and obscene. And there is too much at stake for these immature games to be played.
Let’s break this down for a moment. Donald Trump has been accused of sexual assault on many occasions. SEXUAL. ASSAULT. To say that he is a misogynist is an understatement. To say that he is a white supremacist is not. Donald Trump has filed bankruptcy multiple times. He has repeatedly and serially cheated his vendors and suppliers of pay they were owed, that they earned by the sweat of their brow. This man takes absolutely no responsibility for the words he says, and makes absolutely NO attempt to build bridges. He is severely socially and politically unaware. I have to stop here because this person does not deserve that much of my energy.
I don’t think that Jim Merritt comes anywhere close to deserving this comparison. If the people who have made this accusation believe that he fits this, then they ought to be able to back it up with some evidence. Proof. Put up or shut up. I see no factual basis for this accusation, but by all means, if someone has something then they should enlighten the rest of us. They would do well to also remember that old adage – people who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. They should also make sure that they have fully dislodged any logs and associated wood remnants from their eyes.
When the dark of the moon passes, and we see in full light again, our world will be much different. It is already. When the time comes for the shadow, one can find rest – one can find the time to recover the soul and look inward. There is rhyme and reason to the cycles of life and the cycles of the moon. Breathe.
Keep the glass on your moral compass polished and clear. Remember, the light is always with us, whether we see it or not. Breathe. Stand on the side of truth. Keep your integrity intact.
“If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,Or walk with Kings–nor lose the common touch,If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,If all men count with you, but none too much;If you can fill the unforgiving minuteWith sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,And–which is more–you’ll be a Man, my son!”*
